THE STORY

This 98-unit, very low-income affordable senior housing development is for residents 55 and older. This site is located in old town Reseda on an abandoned lot that was once part of the city center. Inspired by Los Angeles’ 1920’s Spanish Courtyard buildings, this project was designed to seamlessly blend into the existing community. The design concept was to treat the edge as a book-end to the neighborhood, transitioning from smaller scale residential to the more active commercial district.

The massing of the 4-story building was broken down by terracing the roof lines and off-setting the building facades. The overall perceived building scale was reduced to be less imposing to the surrounding single-family homes.  The front entry porte cochere fronting the street is symbolic of a small Spanish hotel. The interior of the lobby features a grand staircase, high volume ceilings, wood paneling, large chandeliers and original artwork.

The common areas are the heart and soul of this senior community. A large living room area is located at the center of the space with a view and access to the extensive landscaped areas outside. An open concept kitchen and community area is provided for large gatherings.
