THE STORY

Goal:

  • To break the mold of standard institutional memory care facilities by providing residents an intimate home-like atmosphere.

  • To seamlessly blend the facility into the surrounding single-family neighborhood.

  • Fill a much-needed gap in the community.

Constraints:

  • Due to city requirements, our designers needed to create a false entry at the street front even though the site required the front entry to be at the back.

This project has historical character utilizing Craftsman-style architecture. Warm materials and an inviting color palette along with stone, siding, and wood details create a strong first impression and fit well into the neighborhood residential context. The kitchen, living, dining and family rooms form large, oversized gathering spaces and reinforce the residential feel. All units connect to a circular corridor and create a safe and secure loop pathway connecting the room/activity areas and eliminate dead ends. Unit plans come in a variety of sizes and offer double rooms and suites with courtyard views; these ultimately maximize privacy with excellent efficiency. By creating 2 separate living “pods,” a service courtyard is available to all residents. Large drop-off porte-cochere and visitor parking are accessed at the rear with service and emergency at the side.
